“Substation Technician Fundamentals: Operation and Maintenance” is designed to equip you with the essential technical knowledge needed to work confidently in high-voltage substations. Whether you’re beginning your journey in the utility industry or seeking to reinforce your on-the-job learning, this course covers critical devices, safety practices, and real-world procedures you’ll encounter in the field.
In this course, you’ll learn how essential substation components such as battery banks, bushings, current transformers (CTs), and disconnect switches function, as well as how to properly inspect and maintain them to ensure reliable performance. You’ll explore the principles behind various types of protective relays, including differential, distance, mechanical overcurrent, and directional protection, and understand how these systems work together to protect electrical infrastructure.
We’ll guide you through the process of testing current transformers and checking the operation of protective devices to verify that the substation is functioning as intended. You’ll also gain a step-by-step understanding of relay isolation procedures, the role of control panels, and best practices for conducting thorough substation inspections.
The course provides valuable insights into the use of SF6 gas in high-voltage equipment, the operation of transmission breakers, and how motorized disconnect switches are controlled and maintained. Additionally, you’ll learn about the function and importance of Device 90 and other key automation systems that play a vital role in modern substation operations.
Substations are the heart of electrical transmission and distribution systems. With this course, you’ll gain the clarity and confidence needed to safely maintain and operate substation equipment. The content is concise, practical, and based on real-world industry experience—ideal for anyone preparing for fieldwork or technical certification.
