In this hands-on course, you’ll learn how to use Meep, a powerful open-source electromagnetic simulation tool, together with Python to model, visualize, analyze, and optimize photonic structures. Starting from a simple waveguide, you’ll progressively build the skills needed to investigate increasingly sophisticated Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) building blocks. Guided by Mattia Conti, a photonic engineer with industry experience, you’ll learn how to create simulation geometries, define materials and sources, visualize electromagnetic fields, excite specific waveguide modes, and extract meaningful information from your simulations.
As the course progresses, you’ll apply these techniques to realistic photonic components, including:
- Waveguides
- Modal decomposition and mode overlap
- Waveguide interfaces, transmission, and reflection
- Linear, parabolic, and exponential tapers
- Directional couplers
- Wavelength‑division multiplexing (WDM)
- 90° waveguide bends
- Building‑block optimization through geometric parameter sweeps
- Simulation resolution and numerical accuracy
- Monte Carlo analysis for robust designs
- Transitioning from 2D to 3D electromagnetic simulations
