Assertive communication isn’t just about being stern. This type of communication comes from a balance between confidence, presence and persuasion. Without these factors, assertive communication can come off as rude or unjust! Assertive communication has been practised by leaders since the dawn of civilisation. Whether to persuade parties for equal rights without compromise or to rally a group of misfits towards incredible success, assertive communication is a key skill that sets apart good leaders from great leaders.
According to a 2024 study by UK-based training organisation, Acuity Training, assertive communication in leadership is crucial; however, 55% of high-level managers feel they’ve missed opportunities due to a lack of assertiveness.
