This comprehensive training course provides an in-depth and practical understanding of IEC 62477-1, the international safety standard for power electronic converter systems and equipment.
The course is designed to help engineers and safety professionals understand why safety requirements exist, how they are applied in real products, and how compliance is verified through testing.
The training begins with a clear explanation of the structure and philosophy of IEC 62477-1, helping participants understand how the standard is organized and how it should be applied during product design, evaluation, and certification. Emphasis is placed on identifying electrical, thermal, mechanical, and material-related hazards that are commonly present in power electronic equipment.
Participants will learn how IEC 62477-1 addresses key safety risks such as:
- Electric shock from high-voltage circuits
- Stored energy in DC capacitors and power stages
- Fire and overheating risks
- Hot surface and burn hazards
- Mechanical risks such as sharp edges, moving parts, and equipment stability
- Material safety concerns including flammability, heat resistance, and aging
The course explains hazard mitigation principles, including insulation systems, clearances and creepage distances, protective earthing, enclosure design, mechanical construction rules, and material selection. These principles are linked directly to real-world products such as inverters, UPS systems, motor drives, DC-DC converters, and other power electronic systems.
A strong focus is placed on practical safety testing methods required by IEC 62477-1. Participants will gain clarity on:
- Dielectric strength and insulation resistance testing
- Protective earth continuity verification
- Temperature rise and abnormal operation tests
- Mechanical strength and enclosure integrity checks
- Material safety and fire-related considerations
The knowledge gained in this course supports:
- Safe product design and design reviews
- Preparation for third-party certification and testing
- Risk assessment and hazard analysis
- Compliance documentation and regulatory discussions
This course is especially valuable for design engineers, test and validation engineers, quality teams, compliance engineers, and certification coordinators who are involved in the development and approval of power electronic equipment.
