This course, “Mastering IEC 61850-5: From Beginner to Advanced,” is designed to provide a structured and practical understanding of IEC 61850-5 and its role in modern power-system automation. Whether you are new to IEC 61850 or already working with protection, automation, and Intelligent Electronic Devices, this course will help you understand the functional and communication requirements behind IEC 61850-based systems.
You will learn how IEC 61850 represents power-system functions, device models, logical nodes, communication requirements, and performance requirements. The course explains how these concepts are connected and how they support reliable communication between IEDs in digital substations.
The course progressively covers the fundamentals before moving toward more advanced concepts. You will develop an understanding of how different substation functions have different communication and performance requirements and how these requirements influence the selection and application of IEC 61850 communication services. You will also explore the relationship between logical nodes, functions, data, IEDs, and communication services, along with the relevance of technologies such as GOOSE, MMS, and Sampled Values in digital substation applications.
