This course provides a practical and structured introduction to Electronic Voltage Transformers (EVTs) and the requirements associated with their application, performance, insulation, EMC, reliability, and testing. It is designed for electrical engineers, protection and control professionals, testing and commissioning engineers, substation professionals, technicians, and students who want to develop a stronger understanding of Electronic Voltage Transformers. Throughout the course, we will explore the important technical concepts associated with EVTs, including definitions and terminology, rated voltages, transformation ratios, voltage factor, accuracy, burden, phase displacement, insulation levels, service conditions, and auxiliary power supply requirements.
The course also covers important EMC requirements, including electromagnetic immunity and emission considerations relevant to electronic equipment used in high-voltage substations. You will learn why EVTs must be designed to operate reliably in the presence of electromagnetic disturbances and abnormal operating conditions. A major part of the course focuses on testing requirements. We will examine the classification of type tests, routine tests, and special tests, and discuss tests such as lightning impulse, switching impulse, wet testing, accuracy testing, abnormal-condition withstand, EMC testing, impulse withstand of low-voltage components, and transient performance testing.
