In this hands-on beginner course, you will build a complete football shot map using real match data from StatsBomb Open Data. Starting with raw event data, we will work step by step through the process of preparing shot events, extracting pitch coordinates, plotting shots on a football pitch, and adding information such as expected goals (xG) and shot outcomes. You will use Python together with pandas, StatsBombPy, Matplotlib, and mplsoccer to create the visualization in Google Colab. Rather than focusing on complex programming concepts, the course is designed around one practical football analytics project that you can follow from beginning to end.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Load real football event data with StatsBombPy
- Filter and prepare shot data with pandas
- Extract x and y coordinates from event locations
- Plot shots on a StatsBomb football pitch with mplsoccer
- Use xG to represent chance quality through marker size
- Distinguish goals from other shot outcomes
- Add titles, legends, and data attribution to your visualization
- Export your finished shot map as an image
- Interpret the visualization and apply the same workflow to another match or team
