Have you ever wondered how real satellite imagery can be searched, processed, visualized, and turned into an interactive web application? In this hands-on course, you will build a complete Satellite Imagery Explorer from scratch using Python, Flask, Sentinel-2 satellite data, STAC, Rasterio, NumPy, and Pillow. We begin by understanding the basics of Earth Observation and satellite imagery, including how satellites capture information about the Earth and how spatial resolution affects the level of detail we can observe.
You will then learn how to search for real Sentinel-2 imagery using the STAC API. You will work with geographic coordinates, locate the corresponding area in satellite imagery, extract image regions, create RGB images, and enhance them using Python-based image processing techniques. Next, you will transform these capabilities into an interactive Flask web application. Users will be able to enter geographic coordinates, search for satellite imagery, and view the processed results directly through the web interface.
The course also covers historical satellite imagery, allowing you to retrieve imagery from different dates and create an interactive before-and-after comparison to explore changes over time. Finally, you will bring everything together, organize your application, upload the project to GitHub, deploy it using Render, and learn a simple technique to reduce memory usage for cloud deployment.
