Dyson Vacuum Cleaner Advertising-Style Shot, Machine from the Future workshop
This is a product photography tutorial for the Professional Interactive Education Program, Workshop #80
When creating advertising images, brands and creative agencies often seek to have the style of image visually convey a message or theme with regard to the product. Sometimes, that message is one of durability and toughness; other times, it may be one of elegance and refinement.
For this month’s workshop, we wanted to create an image that played on the notions of retro-futuristic technology, so what better choice than the humble vacuum cleaner? Powered vacuum cleaners have been around for more than a 100 years and yet, the technology behind them is constantly improving. Our goal was to create a workshop image that featured an advanced technology product (Dyson vacuums have a reputation for innovation) with lighting that harkened back to the halcyon days of the retro-futuristic 1960s, when “spacey” themes were all the rage.
Your goal is to interpret this theme by creating your own retro-futuristic advertising-style product shot. You can certainly use a vacuum cleaner, but feel free to experiment and push your creative limits! We’re excited to see what you come up with.
As a professional photographer, you can reap great benefits from our workshops that you can immediately apply to your own commercial work. As a student of photography looking to expand your technical and creative skills, you’ll find our workshops are the perfect way to gain hands-on experience across the spectrum of product photography.
