Painting the face and figure will ALLWAYS force you to focus hard on accuracy. If the nose is a little to the right, or too long, it will certainly be noticed—as opposed to a missing limb on a tree or the proper length of a house.
I suggest using a plumb line and level when painting portraits and figures, but even with those tools, you will quickly learn to deal with criticism—at the very least, your subject will be there to judge your work!
Portraits are effective and compelling when they tell us something about the person. A good portrait is not just a visual representation of a person; it will also reveal something about the essence of the person
A strong portrait captivates viewers, draws them into the painting, and engages their attention. Such a portrait painting causes the viewer to wonder about the person depicted. In this way a portrait painting or drawing can function as a biography – telling the story of that person’s life.
